Complete Guide to Instagram & Facebook Ideal Image Sizes

This information is current as at November 2019 - We'll update it when Facebook and Instagram change their minds... again!

INSTAGRAM - 

The ideal size range for regular Instagram images is 1080px wide by 566 to 1350px high. 

The maximum image resolution on Instagram is 1080px wide. 

Megabytes, PPI or DPI mean NOTHING!!!!! You only measure digital files for social media by PIXELS. 

You can post any image that is less than 1080pixels wide and Instagram will leave it at that resolution. If you file is less that 320px wide, the quality will be poor.

The height must be between 588 and 1350px high. That's a ratio of 1.91:1 and 4:5. 

The ratio of 4:5 is the same as an 8" x 10" portrait format photo. If your artwork is A4, that is a ratio of 1:1.414 or 4:5.656 so it does not fit the format correctly and will be cropped, unless you add white or black space to the sides.

If your image is larger than these sizes, Instagram will reduce the size to fit. Sizing down is ALWAYS better than sizing up!

Just to make it interesting the ideal size for Instagram Stories is the same format as HD movies (only in vertical format) - 1080 x 1920px (9:16 Ratio). This size will fill your screen. Instagram videos are best filmed in VERTICAL/PORTRAIT format. Keep them to less than 15 seconds.

FACEBOOK - 

There are a few images to consider on Facebook, you need to prepare these correctly if you want your page to look professional.

Once again, a reminder that Megabytes or PPI/DPI DO NOT MATTER for digital images on social media - ONLY PIXELS MATTER!

• The maximum Image Size Facebook will show is 2048 x 2048px. 
• Facebook Profile Picture Size - Upload at 180 x 180px, it will appear at 160 x 160px
• Facebook Cover Size - 851 x 315px, for both Facebook Profile and Business Page.
• Facebook Fan Page Video - Optimum Resolution is 820 x 312px in MP4 format. Minimum of 20sec long to a maximum of 90sec long.
• Regular Post Image - 2048 x 2048px  or 2048px on the long edge - try not to go smaller than 1000px on the long edge.
• Shared Link Images - Recommended size is 1200 x 630px, they will be displayed at around 470px wide.
