Principles, Ethics and Rights -
This introductory chapter aims to provide an ethical framework for working in the visual arts, craft and design sector.
Exhibiting -
This section covers good practice when setting up relationships between artists and exhibiting organisations. It can be used by artists participating in exhibitions and organisations showing artwork. Information included here covers exhibitions where visual arts, craft and design work is not for sale, for both single exhibitions and those touring to multiple venues, as well as festivals.
Selling -
This section covers good practice when selling artwork and establishing relationships between artists and selling organisations. This includes commercial galleries, art fairs, public galleries, spaces for hire and online platforms. This section can be used by artists selling work through various outlets, and organisations who sell artists' work.
Commissioning and Funding -
This section covers good practice when an artist is commissioned to make new work either by a gallery, privately, or for public space. This includes the commissioning process and checklists for agreements. This section also covers public and private funding and good practice for applying and assessing processes. It can be used by artists or organisations engaging in commissioning or funding processes.
Artist Self-Organisation -
This section covers good practice for working with ARIs and Art Centres. This includes internal models, processes and ethical considerations. This section can be used by members of an artist-run organisation or those planning to start one, as well as artists and organisations looking to engage or collaborate with an ARI or an Art Centre.
Awards, Prizes and Competitions -
This section covers good practice for the organisation of visual arts, craft and design awards, prizes and competitions in Australia. This includes the application and judging process and checklists for terms and conditions. This section can be used by artists who enter awards, prizes and competitions, as well as organisers and those considering setting up a new award, prize or competition.
Residencies, Studios, Education and Workshops -
This section covers good practice for residencies, studio programs, and education programs. This includes different types of programs, ethical considerations and agreement checklists. This section can be used by organisers of, and artists engaging in a residency, studio or public program.
Payment Standards -
This section has been drafted by considering the visual arts, craft and design sector as a whole. We have developed a collaborative methodology that aims to balance the value of artists’ work, against the capacity of organisations operating within the context of long-term reductions in funding.
